Maui Tropical Plantation tips

When to go

The Maui Tropical Plantation is located in Waikapu on the Hawaiian island of Maui.  The plantation opens daily from 9am -5 pm.  The grounds are expansive and beautiful with a lot of open space.  There are plenty of areas to explore and just take in the views.  Morning and afternoon offer similar weather aside from a random rain shower.

What to see/do

On the grounds of the Maui Tropical Plantation you will find the tropical gardens which are available to tour on foot or by narrated tram.  For independent foot tours, an app is available which will provide information along the way.

The tram tour is a lovely way to see the gardens and also includes a coconut husking demonstration and a fresh fruit tasting at the end of the tour.

The tour is pricey though, in my opinion and while we enjoyed our experience on the tour we would not do it again but would opt for the walking tour on our own.  Also on grounds of the plantation you will find the fantastic Mill House Restaurant with spectacular views of the gardens and mountain ranges.

The Mill House Roasting Company  which features drinks brewed from the plantation’s own coffee plants and shopping opportunities at the Soley Aloha Boutique and the Country Store.  You can also zip line as a family across the grounds! ( Children must be aged 5 and at least 45 pounds to participate).

What to eat

Having meal at the wonderful Mill House Restaurant is a must when visiting the plantation. This farm to table restaurant features fresh dishes prepared from the plantation’s produce and in conjunction with other local farms!

The restaurant is open daily from 11am -9pm and is a perfect follow up to a late afternoon visit to the plantation grounds.

We found the menu absolutely exquisite from beginning to end and the kids even enjoyed the special offerings for just for them!  We bypassed the Mill Roasting Company this time but saw many visitors sipping delectable brews as they strolled the grounds.

What to wear

The grounds of the plantation are well prepared and and very clean.  There are well paved walkways through the main entry grounds, around the restaurants and the babbling brooks passing through the area.

Even the tropical garden route is well maintained and comfortable to walk.  Reliable walking shoes would be recommended, especially if you are planning to zipline (certain footwear required) or walk the garden tour on your own.  Otherwise, there are no specific stipulations on what you should wear.  We wore sandals and shorts and were able to tour the grounds with ease.  My only other recommendation would be a hat if you are prone to sun sensitivity; there is lush foliage all around and plenty of trees but there may be times when you want some extra protection from the the warm sun.

What to bring

Aside from appropriate attire for your day on the plantation I would recommend a good camera and snacks if you want to avoid purchasing food from any of the readily available vendors.  As sun hat and sunscreen is recommended if you are sensitive to sun exposure.

Have any of you been to Maui?  What was your favorite thing to see or do on the island?

A very nice place for vacation and relaxation. Does their farm have that farm-to-table concept?
